| Resumo | In some regions of Brazil, the existence of a large number of small reservoirs distributed in the same basin has a crucial importance for water supply. The two regions with the highest concentration of small reservoirs are the extreme South of Brazil, where theres an excessively high water demand due the rice crop irrigation, and the semi-arid Northeastern region, where water shortages require the construction of many reservoirs. For managing the use of these resources in the medium and long term, its essential the availability of water level or volume data monitoring, as well as historical series of these values. However, the scarcity of in-situ gaging stations makes the use of remote sensing an alternative to obtain reservoir data records. Satellite radar/laser altimetry is a technique that can be used to estimate water levels of open water bodies. In small reservoirs, with a surface area around 100 hectares or smaller, the restrictions for the use of altimetric sensors increase due the spatial resolution of most these sensors used with hydrological applications. This work presents an approach to determine the storage volume variation in small reservoirs, combining satellite altimetry from the ICESat mission data, as well as image processing techniques. These techniques are related to the extraction of reservoir surface area from optical sensors, more precisely from Landsat images. The comparison with the water volume obtained from the hydrological modeling and water balance demonstrate a good relation with the simulate data and estimated from satellite. |
